Ethnomixicology

Ethnomixicology Review

The Outernationalists is a collaborative effort between Afro Celts' founder/guitarist Simon Emmerson and leading U.K. music writer/DJ/producer Phil Meadley. Their DJ-mixed compilation Ethnomixicology is a unique trip into the heart of global beat culture featuring many rare and exclusive tracks.  On Ethnomixicology, Simon Emmerson and Phil Meadley have looked deep into the bustling, vibrant multi-cultural heart of London and come up with a seriously funky club mix of Afro, Indian, Arabic, Latin, and global psychedelia in the style of Coldcut's classic, Journeys By DJ. Ethnomixicology Specifications

Inspired by traditional music from around the globe as well as Coldcut's Journey By DJ series, Simon Emerson (of Afro-Celts fame) and journalist/producer Phil Meadley formed The Outernationalists. Ethnomusicology, which is the duo's debut, not only does an excellent job fusing new beats and sounds with older traditional songs, it also manages to put the 14 tracks into a seamless 64-minute club mix. As a bonus, many of the tracks featured here are rare or unreleased. Overall, though, the most refreshing part of this musical journey is that the mix goes against conventional wisdom of world music remixes, which are typically on the celestial or lounge vibe. This is worldbeat music that will definitely get people moving on the dance floor. Cakeboy's "Big & Bouncy," a juvenile ode to women's breasts, shows the duo's sillier side, while Bucovina Club Vs. Taraf de Haïdouks's "Carolina" is gypsy-dancehall jam that best showcases their inquisitive nature and deep knowledge of the music. --Tad Hendrickson

Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard-to-Find Hits

Fabulous Fifties Crooners Sing Their Hard-to-Find Hits Review

Legend has it that back in the good old days, men were men - strong, silent, and true. By that measure, crooners were a new breed of man. This suave generation of stylists were born in the halcyon, pre-war days of Rudy Vallee, Bing Crosby, and a young Frank Sinatra, and they were masculine to their core. But, they were sensitive, too, and ladies swooned at the sound of their velvet voices. By the early 1950's, the crooner was king.

Soon, rockers like Elvis Presley super-charged the crooner mystique and made millions, driving the traditional crooners from the airwaves. But, before that happened, countless crooning classics were committed to wax. Now, Hit Parade Records presents 23 of these manly gems on one CD. Every single one of these songs was a Top 40 hit, and no less than 14 were Top 10 - including two #1 smashes! Each rare track has been digitally remastered for the highest quality sound and is presented in its original single version - just the way you heard them on the radio. Over 66 minutes of terrific vintage music.

Hit Parade Records is a new Canadian label dedicated to finding, restoring, and preserving lost treasures like these. Hit Parade was assisted by the same creative folks who lovingly compile those great Eric CD's - including Greg Adams, whose detailed liner notes will fascinate you as you listen to all the Fabulous Fifties Crooners! And, don't miss Hit Parade's feminine companion album, Fabulous Fifties Divas. Read more...

Gentlemen Are Hard To Find

Gentlemen Are Hard To Find Review

The new voice of Soul-Jazz. The warm timbre of his voice, the excellent feeling for rhythm as well as his supreme phrasing make Martin Lechner an exceptional musician. Inspired by the Nat King Cole song "Sweet Lorraine", the CD offers an homage to the spirit of the 1930ies and 40ies. Great!
